J K Rowling is back on Forbes' list of richest people after four year absence

The super successful author whose Harry Potter franchise forms the core of her fortune dropped off the money pile four years ago but recent assessment of her earnings suggests she is a dollar billionaire once more due to the unstoppable march of Harry Potter.

The new film inspired by the Potter world, entitled Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; the author’s involvement with theme parks; and a series of stage productions have all contributed to her resurgence, the New York Times suggested.

The newspaper said that while its calculations are only smart guesswork, Rowling’s total earnings come in at $1.2 billion.

The paper said the core of Rowling’s wealth remains the seven Harry Potter books, which have sold an estimated 450 million copies, with estimated total revenue of £6.1 billion with her share amounting to £900 million at a standard 15 percent author’s royalty.

The author earned as much as £80million from just her Harry Potter theme parks.

'I will ensure 2017 budget is not padded' - Pres Buhari

The distortions that happened to Budget 2016, in which series of rogue projects and figures were injected into the financial document won't happen to next year's budget, President Buhari has vowed. Receiving in audience members of the Governance Support Group (GSG), led by Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, at State House, Abuja, Friday, the President said:

"I am waiting for the 2017 Budget to be brought to us in Council. Any sign of padding anywhere, I will remove it."

President Buhari re-iterated that he had been in government since 1975, variously as governor, oil minister, head of state, and Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF), "and never did I hear the word 'padding' till the 2016 Budget."

He promised that such would never happen again under his watch.

The President said the government stands by its tripod campaign promises of securing the country, reviving the economy, and fighting corruption, but lamented that some people are deliberately turning blind eyes to prevailing realities in the country.

"They don't want to reflect on the situation in which we are, economically. They want to live the same way; they simply want business as usual," he said.

On violence that attend rerun elections in the country, President Buhari stated:

"I agonized over the elections in Kogi, Bayelsa and Rivers states. We should have passed the stage in which people are beheaded, and killed because of who occupies certain offices. If we can't guarantee decent elections, then we have no business being around. Edo State election was good, and I expect Ondo State election to be better."

Speaking on the anti-corruption cases before the courts, the President said he believed the cleansing currently going on "will lead to a better judiciary. When people are sentenced, Nigerians will believe that we are serious."

President Buhari equally told his guests that the progress being made in agriculture and exploitation of solid minerals "gives a lot of hope," adding:

"Our grains go up to Central African Republic, to Burkina Faso, but they can't buy all the grains harvested this year. And next season should be even better. We will focus on other products like cocoa, palm oil, palm kernel, along with the grains. We can start exporting rice in 18 months, and we are getting fertilizers and pesticides in readiness for next year."

Speaking on behalf of members of GSG, Hon. Nwajiuba said the government had succeeded to a large extent on the security and anti-corruption fronts, adding that the group was positive that the economy would soon experience a turnaround, "as the government is working very hard in that direction."

The group said the biggest constituency of the President was the poor and lowly, and thus recommended what it calls "a social re-armament of the poor."

A popular man of God accused of paying a church member who later died during a failed miracle session, N500,000, has finally spoken out about what truly happened.

 

Bishop Dr. Emmanuel Esezobor, President of the Fire House Church International, Nyanya-Abuja said the devil is using some people to spread lies against him because the ministry is waxing stronger than expectations.

 

According to NTA News, the Bishop said that the story is one that will soon pass away.

 

“We have not had a murder case in the Fire House Alter and all the branches we haven’t had a murder case for five years we don’t know where they are getting their stories from these are cheap talkers who are looking for popularity. God be praised.

“We preach Jesus we don’t preach self it has been Jesus all the way and he said if his name is lifted up he will claim souls. It has always been about souls, souls, and souls.

“All our sons, daughters, friends relations believe in our vision and have been praying with us and sending us best wishes and we are at home enjoying Christ and waiting for our evening service today,” he said.

 

Esezobor further said that the church has not held any crusade at the Abuja stadium as the said rumour claimed. According to him, his church is only planning to hold one next year by February, 15th 2017, when the church intends to storm the National Stadium for healing service and wants everyone to be there to see the power and glory of God at work.

 

“When I read the fake and cooked up story I started speaking in tongues because the devil is out to propagate God and celebrates Jesus.

“We also heard how they said a trader whom they claimed I paid to act for me and in the process he died.

“Who then was the trader? Who are his relations? Which police station they took to? Which cell I was detained? All these are questions begging for an answer."

 

Bishop Esezobor said the challenges have made him a champion and that he saw it as a stepping stones to greater things.

 

“Healing is real and I preach it, the Bible says “I shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.

“I have seen God do mighty things in righteousness and this is a big motivation coming at the end of the year making us more sensitive and prayerful.

“We know that the devil is after the body of Christ and I pray for all the pastors to go back to their prayer alters as we are over comers.” He added

Olasunkanmi popularly known as “Seun Egbegbe’’ was alleged to have stolen nine iPhones at the Computer Village, in Ikeja.

“At the level of the guild and association, because we are not a hundred percent settled, there are court cases and issues at the national level that are affecting issues at the state chapters.

“My position as interim chairman is that no formal request has been made to us for assistance in anyway.

“As such what you do in that kind of situation is you allow the law to take its course, because law and order is paramount in building society.

“If he has been found to commit that offence, the law must take its course.’’

EFCC Detains Former Skye Bank Chairman Over N1bn Bribe to Ex-FCT Minister

Agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested and detained Tunde Ayeni, a former chairman of Skye Bank, over allegations that he bribed a former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Bala Mohammed, to acquire 54 plots of land in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.

 

Two EFCC sources told SaharaReporters that Mr. Ayeni was arrested yesterday and has remained in detention because he was initially uncooperative.

 

One of our sources added that Mr. Ayeni is also being investigated for playing roles in several other deals involving former First Lady Patience Jonathan and a former head of state, Abubakar Abdulsalam, who co-owns a telecommunications company with the former banking executive.

 

Sources disclosed that Mr. Ayeni was still undergoing interrogation and may remain in detention as investigators work hard to unearth his many deals.

Nigeria Air force to investigate cause of crash of presidential jet, Agusta Westland 101

The attention of the Nigerian Air Force has been drawn to media report on the crash of one of the Agusta Westland 101 helicopters handed over recently by the Presidency. Contrary to the crash report, it is pertinent to state that the mishap occurred while the helicopter was taxing after a successful mission.
The incident happened last week on the tarmac at 33 Logistics Group, Makurdi. The NAF has since set-up a board of officers to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the incident. The 7-man board is headed by Air Vice Marshal Emmanuel Anebi. Details of the investigation would be communicated to the public as soon as the Board concludes its assignment.

Man dies inside latrine as he tries to help a lady retrieve her properties

A 28 year old man, Bernard Kirui  from Nyota, in Kenya on Friday died after he jumped into the latrine to help a lady, Jackline Chelimo to retrieve her identification card and Ksh 600 that fell inside the laterine while she was making use of it.
The lady had offered to pay him if he could help her retrieve her properties but the young man who was the breadwinner of his family died in the process.

According to Star news, the man is from a poor family and takes care of his seven sibling and aged mother by doing menial jobs.

“He was the breadwinner for his seven siblings and an ageing mother. He was a hardworking youth who did casual jobs along Mwahe-Masaita road being repaired by the county government,” said Chief Rachael Tuei.

His body has been transferred to Molo sub county hospital mortuary and investigations are underway.

Alabama Police Officer Sacked Over Racist Meme Facebook Post On Michelle Obama

A police officer in Alabama, Joel Husk  has been fired after sharing what many consider to be racist memes about Michelle Obama, on his personal Facebook page. He was sacked from the police force on Wednesday for a Facebook post.

Husk shared a meme on his page showing pictures of Melania Trump with the words, ‘Fluent in Slovenian, English, French, Serbian and German’ and another photo of Michelle Obama with the words ‘Fluent in Ghetto.’
Another post Husk, 37, shared showed a photo from the Facebook group ‘Last American Patriots’.
That post showed bodies lying on an apparent battlefield with the caption, ‘Over 620,000 white people died to free black slaves and still to this day not even 1 thank you,’ according to Bryant.
Bryant stated that the two posts violated a long-standing policy of the police department, the city of Talladega’s code of conduct and their social media policy.
‘We will not tolerate that kind of conduct by any employees. We take very seriously our responsibility to treat everyone equally and equitably.  We have to make sure we take steps for the community to trust us.’
He told The Washington Post that the statements Husk posted are ‘deemed to be biased or racially insensitive or derogatory can affect the community’s trust in the police department and, when that happens, we have to take action to correct it.”
He added that ‘As public employees, and especially law enforcement officers, we have a standard of excellence to uphold.’
Husk, who had worked with the department for about two and a half years, could not be reached for comment.

Baby found abandoned in carton near a refuse dump in Akwa Ibom, cries to death

Residents were thrown into shock over the death of a baby found abandoned in
biscuit carton along Ikot Ekpene Road in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

The baby girl, neatly dressed and abandoned near a refuse dump, supposedly cried herself to death.



According to reports, the unidentified baby became pale after a long
period of crying, before passing out.





One of the witnesses said the
mother might have abandoned the baby because she considered it a witch
or she might have been driven by poverty.





"There are lot of children being thrown away like this in
recent times because the mothers think they're witches or plagued by
demon spirits or maybe for lack of what feed the children." the witness
said.





Mr. Okon Isaac, who was on his way to a fuel station along Ikot Ekpene Road, said he heard the cry of a baby
near the refuse bin.





"I have been here since 5:47 am. I wanted to buy
fuel from Total, which only sells the product when available between the
hours of 4 and 6:20am. After this time, they stop selling pretending
not to have the product. As I was passing, I heard the cry of the baby. I began to
wonder where the baby was crying from, but when I got close to the
refuse bin, just off the road, I saw a baby girl neatly dressed and
dumped in a biscuit carton," said Mr Okon.





"I could not go to Total in search of fuel again. I stayed
behind to observe if the mother of the baby might change her mind and
come back for the baby. And before long, people started to troop in as they heard the
cry of the baby. As we live in a period of child theft and selling of
children for money, people were scared to touch the baby. They all stood helpless, should anyone risk lifting the baby,
and the police happen to be around, the individual can be accused of
child theft, or whatever." He added.





The police, who confirmed the incident said they were aware of
the situation and had contacted the Ministry of Environment for
necessary action.


Meanwhile, until the baby died; neither the police nor officials of the Ministry of Environment were seen at the scene.

Mother Whose 3 Children Were Beheaded By Suspected Ritualists Cries Out

Mrs. Cecilia Emberga Agammbuee, mother of the three children beheaded on October 30 at Disol village in Gasol local government area of Taraba State by yet unknown persons, has narrated her story to Sunday Vanguard.

“The bereaved mother, who spoke in tears at Disol village, a settlement where the ugly incident occurred, has just one child left. Cecilia’s story was told in Tiv through an interpreter.“

She identified the three slain children as Terdors, a girl, 10; Terna Embelga, a boy, 8, and Sulumshima Embelga, a girl, 6.

The three of them went to bath in a nearby stream called Jookwa alongside eight other children around 5pm on October 30”, she narrated.

 “When they (all the 11 children) finished swimming, they decided to fetch water with their buckets for their use at home. On their homeward journey along the bush path, two men suddenly emerged from a farm rice and grabbed one of my three children in the group by the neck. “While the other children in the group threw away the buckets of water they were carrying amid the ambush and ran for their dear lives, my two other children decided to fight back and rescue their sibling from the assailants.

The escaped children brought the news home. Immediately, my husband, fellow villagers and I mobilised to the scene of the attack where we found the headless bodies of the three children in a pool of blood. It was horrifying.

“Beholding the headless bodies, I thought I would die. There were other items lying on the ground at the scene of the crime. “The items include a weird looking cap, substances believed to be hard drugs and a blood stained shirt.
“We didn’t see the heads of the children. They may have been taken away for ritual purposes. “I had four children. With three of them killed in cold blood, I am left with only one that I am B.reastfeeding. It all shows the seriousness of the insecurity in the land.” She wept.
