Photo: Woman with maggots dropping from her private part shocks Ogun community

A woman with maggots dropping continuously from her private parts shocked residents of Olakula area of Idiroko in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State on Wednesday.

According to TheNation, the scene turned chaotic as residents trooped out to see the woman, identified as Iya Toheeb, who sat in a car with the assistance of family members and sympathisers.

It was thought that she might have been a victim of money-making ritual after her condition allegedly
defied orthodox medication.

The woman was also brought to one of the men she was associated with, a carpenter in the community. Of the reason for bringing the afflicted woman to the man, a source at the scene who asked not to be named, said:
“The woman was brought to the carpenter who was her former husband. Her family members believed that the man may be responsible for her worsening condition that defied treatment in hospital where she was admitted for months.
Doctors were said to have advised her relatives to seek alternative medicine to her ill-health because it had gone beyond the purview of orthodox medicine.’’
Another source, who did not want her name in print, told TheNation:
“The woman had dated different men in the past and it is believed that she may have been used for money-making ritual going by what we heard from those who know her.
“She has no wound in her private part yet maggots keep dropping from her sexual organ and that sends a signal that there is more to her problem than meets the eye, particularly since doctors have asked her relatives to seek help from native doctors for solution to her problem.”
It was learnt that the carpenter, whose real name could not be ascertained at press time, made remarks that suggested the woman was being punished for her promiscuity, after which the woman’s family members decided to bring her to him for possible solution to her predicament. The carpenter reportedly fled before the arrival of TheNation's correspondent.

At the scene, sympathisers helped spread a sack on the car seat on which the woman sat when the maggots continued to drop even as a stench emanating from her body fouled the air.
“This is what my beauty has done to me o,” said the woman shortly before being taken away by her family members

"Largely peaceful, widespread inducement and vote buying" Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room assesses Edo state election

The Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, a coalition of civic groups dedicated to monitoring and improving the electoral process in Nigeria, has described the Edo State gubernatorial election as "largely peaceful" marred with incidents of "inducement and vote buying". While commending the high voter turnout, the group noted lamented that the collation of results was a major weakness. Read full press release issued on Thursday, summarizing its observations of the election held on Wednesday.

INTERIM STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE NIGERIA CIVIL SOCIETY SITUATION ROOM ON THE EDO STATE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION HELD ON WEDNESDAY, 28TH SEPTEMBER 2016
Issued: 2:00pm, Thursday, 29th September 2016
The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (Situation Room) observed the Edo State Governorship election held Wednesday, 28th September 2016 and received field reports from its deployed observers and other election observer networks.
Accordingly, the Situation Room would like to make the following observations:
GENERAL OBSERVATION:
The election was held against the background of a postponement that had cited security as a concern. The postponement fuelled perception in the public mind of a likelihood of bias. However, the atmosphere surrounding the election was largely peaceful and devoid of any major acts of violence, which was a concern for several citizens of Edo State and election observers.
While the process and conduct of the elections went smoothly, a major weak link in the conduct of elections in Nigeria again manifested – the collation of results – and this raised questions over the transparency of this particular process in the election.
Turn out at the polls was impressive and voters generally were able to vote without fear or intimidation, although incidents of vote buying by both major contending political parties cast a shadow of interference with the exercise of free will by voters.
INEC:
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) made good effort to commence accreditation and voting early in most polling units across the State. Reports indicate early arrival of electoral officials and materials in most of the polling units in the State (as at 8:30 am officials had taken position in most polling units). However, there were reports of delay in opening of polls in some units across the State with several polling units not opening polls even up till about 9am and 10am. Electoral staff was generally professional and exhibited willingness to do their work.

The performance of the smart card readers was restricted to the authentication of the Permanent Voters Card as there were reports of widespread failure of verification of the fingerprints, which seemed to slow down the process in some polling units. However, there were reports of seeming collaboration between INEC personnel, security agents and parties to encourage vote buying by setting polling stations in such a manner as to breach secrecy of the polls and encourage inducement.
COLLATION OF VOTES:
Collation of votes was a major weak link in the conduct of the Edo State Governorship elections and marred the credibility of what was a well-organised election by INEC. Although voting ended early, the collation process was very slow and had to be suspended during the late evening, resuming the next morning. In the interval, there was no way of confirming or verifying the integrity of election materials, ballots and results. The gaps and challenges with collation of results certainly raises issues of transparency and integrity of the ballot and elections that INEC will need to resolve if elections in Nigeria is to be accepted as credible.
The delays resulted in reports emanating from some Registration Area Centres and local governments of tampering with the votes. In Esan Central LGA, the Situation Room received reports of attempts to fiddle with the collation process by the inflation of voting figures in favour of a particular political party, after the process was concluded. In Oredo LGA – a largely urban area, the collation also progressed very slowly.
In addition to slow collation and the attendant challenges, there were reports from several local governments of security personnel not being available to protect ballot materials and to accompany electoral officials from the polling units to the Ward Collation Centres and of their being absent at the different Collation Centres. This led to incidents of political party thugs attacking electoral officials and destroying materials as was reported in Ikpoba-Oka LGA, which has about 340 polling units.
SECURITY:
Security agencies were present and commendably deployed personnel during accreditation and voting. Up to the point of arrival of materials, security personnel were very professional and courteous. However, there was lack of coordination among the different arms of security agencies and inability to caution vote buying at the polling units.
There seemed to have been a failure in the synergy between the security personnel and INEC and among security personnel on the field. This lack of synergy led to conflicting activities and as well, the absence of security at critical times of the election especially during the collation of results. Before the election, there were reports of materials that were unescorted in a few local governments areas particularly in Ward 6 in Orhionwon L.G.A.
Welfare of security agencies was also a huge concern for the Situation Room, as most security personnel who interacted with our observers mentioned that they had not be provided with payment of allowances or given logistics support to enable them effectively carry out their roles.
POLITICAL PARTIES:
There were concerns of widespread inducement and vote buying in which two of the major contending parties were cited. The vote buying also led to the monitoring of the votes that were cast by officials of the said parties, apparently in a bid to ensure that voters who were paid voted as agreed. This monitoring was aided by the placement of the voting cubicles in a manner that enabled the party agents to monitor the ballots cast, thus violating the principle of secrecy of vote.
ELECTORATE:
Reports from observers indicate good turn out of voters in most of the polling units visited.
Generally, voters were very patient and queued up to cast their votes. The atmosphere surrounding the elections was largely peaceful with only few incidents of skirmishes reported. This was in contrast to fears created before the election that violence would be more prevalent.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Following from its observation of the Edo Governorship election, Situation Room will like to make the following preliminary recommendations:
1.     INEC:
a.     Situation Room calls on INEC to show a greater determination to improve on the electoral process by better managing the collation of results. A situation where voting concludes at the polling units early during the day and collation begins so much late at night does not allow for transparency and credibility of the electoral process.
b.    In addition, INEC will need to take proactive steps to ensure that the secrecy of voting is protected and that political parties who buy votes are not placed in   a position that they can verify the thumb printing of ballot papers.
2.    SECURITY SERVICES:
There is an important need for revitalization of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security to ensure synergy and delivery on results by the agencies. The deployment of security personnel also needs to be better handled. Most of the security personnel deployed for the elections complained of not being paid their allowances leading to their personally paying their way to attend to the important national duty of elections. Although they report of assurances of their allowances being paid, this situation is not good enough and should be avoided so that security personnel do not become even more prone to inducement by political interests.
The Situation Room is made up of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) working in support of credible and transparent elections in Nigeria and includes such groups as Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), CLEEN Foundation, Action Aid Nigeria, Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), Proactive Gender Initiative (PGI) Enough is Enough Nigeria, WANGONET, Partners for Electoral Reform, JDPC and Youth Initiative for Advocacy, Growth & Advancement (YIAGA). Others are Development Dynamics, Stakeholders Democracy Network, Human Rights Monitor, Election Monitor, Reclaim Naija, Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, CITAD, Alliance for Credible Elections (ACE) CISLAC, Edo CSOs, CONGOs Edo State and several other CSOs numbering more than seventy.

I thought God had forgiven me – Suspect arrested for kidnap, murder of poly student

On May 25, 2016, Ikenna Osuji, a Federal Polytechnic, Nekede student who was also working as a taxi driver along to finance his studies, met his death in the hands of kidnappers when he drove into a land where 30-year-old Chinedu Azuazu was a security guard.

Azuazu, The late Ikenna
Saturday PUNCH reports that Ikenna was fairly known to Azuazu because he used to drive prospective land buyers to the large expanse of land guarded by Azuazu in his cab. But May 25 was the last day the young man would ever be seen alive. He drove into the land again that day and was
never seen again.

When Azuazu was nabbed on September 12, 2016 by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Response Team, details of the gruesome end Ikenna met in the hands of his captors emerged.

Azuazu, a father of one living at Omouku area Port Harcourt, Rivers State, said he was employed to guard the land in question, which belonged to the Alakahia community close to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

He said,
“The man who employed us never paid us. He would rather take us to a bar and buy us drinks and then give us small money, like N3,000.  It was too small for me. When my wife became pregnant and I needed money to prepare for our coming child, he refused to assist me.
“I saw my chance to make money when Ikenna came to our site on May 25. My colleague, Joshua, and I decided to kidnap him. We believed he was from a rich family and thought that was why he normally brought people to buy land at the site.
“When we sighted him, we threatened to shoot him with our double-barrelled gun. We then kidnapped and took him deep into the forest. While we kept him there, we called his relatives with his phone and demanded a N5m ransom.
“Ikenna’s brother told us that he did not have up to that amount. We reduced the ransom to N2m and threatened to kill him if they did not pay. While we were waiting on the family to pay us the ransom, Ikenna spent 14 days in our custody.
“On the 15th day, I left him in Joshua’s custody to go and buy some food. When I returned I found him lying motionless on the ground.   I asked Joshua what happened and he told me that when I was away, Ikenna attempted to escape and he almost overpowered him before he found a stick and hit him in the head.”
Azuazu said he checked Ikenna’s pulse and realised that he was still breathing but faintly.

According to him, there was nothing he could do to help the young man and had to leave him on the ground till he breathed his last.

He said after few hours, he went to check Ikenna’s pulse again and noticed that he had died.

The suspect said,
“I called his brother, who had been communicating with us about the ransom and he said he could only afford N120,000. I asked him to take it to the Teaching Hospital Road and drop it at a certain spot.
“He did as I instructed and I went there to take the money. We took part of the money to  the Rumuola Market and bought a bedsheet, which we took to the forest to wrap Ikenna’s body. We stuffed it in the boot of his car and took it to a farm in Umunkwa Igbodo in Etche Local Government of Rivers State, where we dumped it.
“We later sold the car, a Nissan Primera, in Owerri, Imo State for N180,000.  We shared the money and the ransom. I took N158,000 and gave Joshua N148,000. As soon as Joshua collected his share, he disappeared. I have not seen him since that day. I used part of my share to pay a loan I took for my wife’s delivery.”
A source said when police investigators visited Alakahia community, a chief, Hyacinth Akwukwauegbu, told them that a corpse was found on his farm and that it had been buried without reporting the discovery to the police.

Azuazu said after Joshua left, he also travelled to Lagos to search for a job but had to go back to Port Harcourt when no job was forthcoming.

The suspect said,
“Few days before my arrest, I had a dream that my former boss, Ibe, was killed. I called to warn him but he asked if I had anything to do at the time. When I told him I had no job, he told me to come and see him.  When I got to his house, the police arrested me and said I killed Ikenna.  I did not know how they knew.
“I thought God had forgiven me. In July 2016, I went to a pastor and confessed what I did. He prayed for me and warned me against going back to crime. I have heeded his warning. After my arrest, I have also met Ikenna’s brother to ask for forgiveness.”
Ikenna’s elder brother, Peter, who was the one the kidnappers contacted, said he paid N1.2m as ransom as against the N120,000 Azuazu admitted to.

According to him, Ikenna bought a car and used it as cab to support himself in school.

He said,
“Anytime he was on break, he came to Port Harcourt to use his car as a taxi. I first noticed that sometime was wrong when I had not seen for some days and I got a call from one of my in-laws, who confirmed the same thing that he was missing.
“The day I got a call from his kidnappers, I was about to ask him where he had been because the call came from his line when they told me they had abducted him and I should pay or they would kill him. For the weeks they were in touch, they refused to allow me to speak with him.
“I had to sell one of my properties to raise N1m to add to the little cash I had. But they insisted that it had to be N5m and that if they killed Ikenna, his blood would be on my head. I was terrified and went everywhere in search of money.
“When I eventually got N1.2m, I called them and lied that I had N2m. They told me to take it  to East-West Road and drop it there. They said if they saw any glimpse of a policeman, they would kill my brother. When I got to Alakahia Junction, and dropped the money as instructed, I called Ikenna’s line but it was switched off. I had to quickly report the mater to Chuba Police Division and the matter was later transferred to the Rivers State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Department.”
Peter said after one month of seeing no trace of his brother, he started visiting prophets for help in desperation. The prophets told him his brother would be found alive.

He later reported the case to the Inspector-General of Police Response Team, who commenced investigation and eventually tracked down the suspects.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that the police eventually arrested Ibe, who employed Ikenna’skillers as guards.

The corpse of the deceased was later exhumed and deposited in the mortuary.

The police have said investigation was still ongoing in the case

Grandmother shrinks to size of 2ft-tall toddler after birth of her son (photos)

A rare medical condition has caused a grandmother to shrink to the height of a toddler - two feet tall after the delivery of her third child, a son.

Looking like a small baby , Shanti Devi, 60, spends her days cuddled up and lying on a cot, mumbling or singing alone.

Her limbs have shrunk, twisted and have become so rigid that any movement is impossible for her.

She cannot open her hands and spread her legs or even tilt her head and entirely relies on her children
for assistance.

She has been like this for more than two decades.

Devi once stood five-feet tall but in the past 25 years she has gradually shrunk to just two-feet tall.
"I have been living like this for nearly 25 years now. This is painful. I get bored but I can do nothing on my own. I miss sitting and waking and meeting my friends or watering plants," said Devi in a hoarse voice.
About how it all started, her husband Gangacharan Kushwaha said:
"She was perfectly healthy and leading a normal life when we got married thirty five years ago.
Problems only started after the delivery of our third child, a son. She had become weak and very slow. After three months, she complained of severe pain in her bones that had become stiff.
After a couple of months, she noticed changes in her body as she was looking smaller," he added.
"She told us but we did not believe her until we realised she had shortened by half feet in just four months. However, she could walk."
But Shanti's condition deteriorated and she became completely bed-ridden after a thatched roof from a neighbouring hut fell on her legs.
"One day, while neighbours were fitting their new thatched roof, she was looking at it and it accidentally fell on her legs. After that accident, she could not get up on her feet.
"Her bones had become weak and tight. She complained of severe pain and eventually lost physical strength and became bed-ridden," added the 62-year-old farmer.

While her peculiar condition baffled her family and neighbours, Gangacharan sought help from several doctors but unfortunately, no form of treatment or medicine could work and heal her.

The helpless husband said:
"I took her to several hospitals for treatment. Wherever people suggested to me, I took her there. Even when I had no money, I did not lose hope. But there was no result. Eventually I gave up on her treatment."
While her pitiable condition has left her family distressed, Shanti has become an attraction in her village in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh in north India.

People from far away villages throng to her small shanty to take a glimpse of her.

Neighbour Ajay Singh, 27 said:
"I was born here and I have never seen her walking. Earlier she used to crawl but after a roof from a neighbour fell on her legs, she could never walk."
For more than a decade, Shanti Devi has not been to any doctor and her family is uncertain about the 'mysterious' condition.

But Dr Pankaj Srivastava, a local physician, believes her condition looks like Brittle Bone disease or Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

He said:
"I cannot say anything without diagnosis but it looks like to be a case of OI, a genetic disease where bones become fragile and break easily. But without examination, nothing could be said."

World Heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury tests positive for cocaine!

The Gypsie King as he is fondly called by fans- Tyson Fury, the reigning WBA, WBO, IBO, Ring magazine, and lineal heavyweight champion has tested positive for cocaine according to reports, weeks after pulling out from his heavyweight title defence with Klitschko citing mental issues.

Fury, was said to have been informed on Thursday night that his A sample from a random urine test on 22 September had tested positive for the substance benzoylecgonine, the central compound found in cocaine.

The Manchester born boxer who claims to be born again is set to lose his titles won in 2015. The presence of cocaine in his blood samples brings an all time low to Fury's career and could even bring about litigations and lawsuits against him and his camp.

Klitschko, who was supposed to have fought him since, has been made to wait for almost a year to regain his lost belts and with this new revelation could fight someone else for the WBO, WBA and IBO world titles..

A whole host of partners in the rematch - including television stations, the Manchester Arena which had been booked for October 29 and the fans who had invested in non-refundable hotel bookings and travel costs - may even consider seeking financial compensation from Fury and his camp.

Bernd Boente, the manager of Klitschko, has responded to the revelations: 'If this is true, Fury is the most unworthy of all the heavyweight champions.
'This might explain a lot but for certain this is terrible for boxing. I have to say that Fury must be the most disgraceful heavyweight champion of all time.
'Don't forget this comes in a package which also includes his outrageous homophobic and anti-Semitic comments.
'The wider issue for all of us in the sport is having him holding this position while being caught this way. What kind of an example is he setting to others in the sport and to youngsters all over the world by something like this?
'We have been involved with many outstanding holders of the most prestigious title in world sport. Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Larry Holmes, your own Lennox Lewis were wonderful champions and splendid human beings. This is such a shame.

US congratulates Nigeria as it marks its 56th Independence

The United States of America on Friday congratulated Nigeria as it marks its 56th Independence Anniversary which holds on Saturday.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the US message was conveyed on behalf of President Barack Obama and the American people by the US Secretary of State, John Kerry.

Kerry was said to have admitted that there was still much work to be done to provide economic opportunities for all in Nigeria, end corruption and win the fight against Boko Haram among other challenges.

He however expressed the confidence that Nigerians are working hard to address current national challenges.

Adesina quoted Kerry as saying;

“On behalf of President Obama and the American people, I congratulate the citizens of Nigeria as you celebrate your Independence Day on October 1.
I recently returned from my third trip to Nigeria as Secretary, and I came away with a strong sense of the nation’s resolve to build a better future. During my trip, I was reminded that many Nigerians are engaged in bringing people together across the divides of culture, religious practices, and ethnicity.
“There is still much work to be done to provide economic opportunities for all, end corruption, win the fight against Boko Haram, ensure broad respect for human rights and provide humanitarian relief for millions of displaced people.
“But we know that Nigerians are hard at work to address these challenges.
“The United States looks forward to deepening our partnership and friendship with Nigerians from all walks of life, so that we may work together for the betterment of Nigeria and all of Africa.
“Best wishes to all of you on this the 56th anniversary of your independence

Man murders wife for converting to Christianity

A 42-year-old man identified as Amir Darbanou has reportedly murdered his 35-year-old wife, Nasrin Abek, for converting to Christianity in Sydney, Australia.

The suspect and his wife were originally from Iran but had been living in Australia for the past four years, the Sydney Morning Herald is reporting.

Reports say the suspect, who had been growing increasingly angry with his wife, a hairdresser, and believed she had been unfaithful religiously, stabbed her multiple times with a knife, inside their Potts Point unit apartment in St Neot Avenue on Wednesday.

Her body was however discovered at about 6:20 am on Thursday by the police after her father reportedly alerted the police.

According to the deceased’s father, he received a ‘disturbing’ phone call from his son-in-law, Darbanou on Wednesday telling him his daughter was dead and on Thursday morning, police visited the scene where they found Abek’s body with multiple stab wounds.

The father said he had earlier raised concerns to the police about his daughter’s welfare in her husband’s house, following her conversion, before the unfortunate incident leading to her violent death.

According to the report, there was no previous history of domestic violence between the couple, until that night when some claimed to have heard a piercing scream around the time she may have been murdered.

Meanwhile, the suspect appeared before Central Local Court on Friday, facing a one-count of murder.

A Kings Cross Police Superintendent, Michael Fitzgerald, was quoted to have said police had recovered what was possibly the weapon used to kill Ms. Abek from the tip where the rubbish from the unit block was dumped.killer3

Fitzgerald said, “We are not looking at any other suspects in this matter. It is alleged that the son-in-law told [the father] certain things which brought the concern from the father to speak with police today.

“There was no known history of domestic violence between the pair. Any incident of violence, let alone domestic violence, is tragic and we ask anyone if they’ve got any information about any loved one or any friend who may be involved in any domestic incident to come forward, to contact us, because we need to know,” the police Superintendent stated.

The magistrate, Les Mabbott, reportedly adjourned the case till November 24.
